Leasing a Tesla? Your Referral Link Still Counts. Here's Exactly How.
Key takeaway
A Tesla referral for a lease works exactly like one for a purchase: the lessee gets the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial and the referrer earns $250 USD / $325 CAD on delivery. This guide covers US vs Canada differences, how the referral stacks with the $6,500 lease credit and Heroes discount, and what happens with business leases, transfers and buyouts.

Yes. A Tesla referral for lease orders works the same way it does for a cash or financed order: if you start your lease order from an active referral link, you get the 3-month Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial after delivery, and the owner who referred you earns $250 USD / $325 CAD in Tesla Credits once you take delivery. Leasing does not disqualify either side.
Where people get tripped up is everything around that rule: whether the referral survives the U.S. $6,500 lease credit, whether a lessee can later refer other people, and what happens with business leases and buyouts. This guide walks through each one.
Tesla Referral for Lease Orders: What Each Side Gets in 2026
Tesla's Refer and Earn terms talk about "ordering" and "taking delivery" of a qualifying new vehicle. They do not carve out leases. A lease order placed through a referral link counts as a referred order, and the delivery counts as a referred delivery.
| Who | United States | Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Lessee (you) | 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial after delivery | 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial after delivery |
| Referrer | $250 USD in Tesla Credits | $325 CAD in Tesla Credits |
Two details matter for lessees specifically:
The FSD trial starts at delivery, not at order. On a 24- or 36-month lease you get the same three months as a buyer would.
The referrer's credit is tied to your delivery. If your lease order is cancelled before delivery, no credit is granted. Their credit then expires 12 months after the grant date, as covered in our guide to how Tesla Credits work and when they expire.
Model eligibility is the same as for purchases. In 2026 that means Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck (Premium AWD and Cyberbeast; the entry Dual Motor AWD trim is excluded). Tesla removed Model S and Model X from the referral program in March 2026 ahead of ending their production, so a lease on one of the last S/X inventory units will not carry a referral benefit.
US vs Canada: Same Rule, Different Numbers
The eligibility rule does not change at the border. What changes is the reward size and the incentives sitting underneath the lease.
| United States | Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| Referral on a lease | Yes | Yes |
| Referrer credit | $250 USD | $325 CAD |
| Lessee perk | 3-month FSD trial | 3-month FSD trial |
| Government incentive on a lease | None federally since Sept 30, 2025; Tesla's own $6,500 lease credit instead | Federal EVAP rebate (2026) where the vehicle qualifies, plus provincial programs |
| Heroes discount | $500 USD | $1,000 CAD |
Canadian lessees should check the province-level picture, because the rebates and their lease treatment vary. Our province-by-province referral guide and the Canada EVAP rebate guide cover that in detail.
How the Referral Stacks With the $6,500 Lease Credit and the Heroes Discount
This is the question U.S. lessees ask most, and the answer is that the three things live in different layers of the deal.
The $6,500 lease credit is Tesla's replacement for the federal EV tax credit that ended September 30, 2025. It is baked into the lease pricing on eligible Model 3 and Model Y leases, so you do not apply it or claim it. It shows up as a lower capitalized cost.
The Everyday Heroes discount ($500 USD in the U.S., $1,000 CAD in Canada) is a purchase-price reduction for military, first responders, healthcare workers, teachers and students, applied by Tesla after you verify eligibility.
The referral is not a price change at all. For the Model 3, Model Y and (since March 2026) Cybertruck, the buyer-side reward is the FSD trial, not a dollar discount. Nothing in the lease math changes, which is exactly why it does not conflict with the other two.
So on a qualifying U.S. lease you can end up with the $6,500 lease credit in the pricing and the referral FSD trial after delivery, plus the Heroes discount if Tesla offers it on lease orders (we could not confirm that it does). The referral and Heroes discount stack on purchases. What does not stack with a referral is Tesla's loyalty credit for existing owners, and that one is irrelevant here anyway because the referral program is for first-time Tesla buyers. Our discount stacking guide has the full matrix, and the $6,500 lease credit post explains where that number came from.
One caution: Tesla changes stacking rules without notice. Before you pay the order fee, look at the order summary and confirm the referral line is present alongside whatever else you expect.
Step by Step: Ordering a Tesla Lease Through a Referral Link
The process is identical to a purchase until the payment step. The critical part is step 1, because Tesla applies the referral by order session, not by a code you type in.
Open a working referral link first. Do this before you build the car, not after. If you do not have an owner to ask, use our rotating referral link, which routes you to an active, uncapped link.
Sign in to your Tesla account in the same browser tab.
Configure the vehicle as normal. Do not switch devices or close the tab mid-flow.
At the payment step, choose Lease. Set the term, annual mileage and down payment. In the U.S. the $6,500 lease credit is already reflected in the quoted payment on eligible models.
Check the order summary before paying the order fee. You should see the referral benefit (the FSD trial) listed. If it is missing, stop, reopen the referral link and start again.
Pay the $250 USD order fee (non-refundable) and complete the lease application when Tesla prompts you.
After you place the order, the referrer sees your referral as "pending" in their Tesla app until delivery. If you forgot the link and already ordered, read our post on what you can still do after ordering before you do anything drastic.
Edge Cases: Lease Transfers, Business Leases and Buyouts
Can a lessee refer other people?
Tesla's terms say you must own a qualifying Tesla product in your Tesla account, and a leased car is technically owned by the leasing company, so it is unclear whether a lease counts. A leased car does sit in your account, and many lessees see Refer and Earn in the app and refer normally. However, some lessees have reported Tesla support telling them that leased vehicles no longer grant Refer and Earn access after recent app updates, while others in the same threads still had it. Treat this as inconsistent rather than settled: open the Tesla app, look for Refer and Earn, and if it is there, your link is live.
Lease transfers
Tesla stopped allowing lease transfers in North America after November 27, 2024. Since a referral only ever pays out on a first delivery, a transfer was never a referral event anyway. If you took over someone's lease before that cutoff, no referral applies to you, and you did not generate one for anyone.
Business leases
A business lease placed through Tesla's design studio with a referral link should be treated like any other order for referral purposes (we found no 2026 source either way): the benefit attaches to the order session. Where it gets murky is when the lease is arranged through a third-party fleet or leasing company that orders on your behalf. In that case the order is placed by them, not through your referral link, and the referral usually does not attach. If a company car is on the table, ask the fleet provider whether you can start the order yourself.
Buying out your lease at the end
Tesla reintroduced end-of-lease buyouts for Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck lessees. A buyout is not a new vehicle order, so no referral benefit applies to it, and nobody earns credits from it. The referral was already used when you originally took delivery.
Ordering a second Tesla on a lease
Buyer-side referral benefits are for your first qualifying Tesla product. If you already have a Tesla in your account and lease a second one, Tesla's loyalty benefit applies instead of the referral, and you cannot claim both. See the program overview for why Tesla structures it this way.
Why This Question Comes Up So Often
Two reasons. First, older versions of the program did have quirks around leases: the buyer-side reward used to be a dollar discount ($500, $1,000, even $2,000 at points in 2024 and 2025), and how a discount applied to a lease's capitalized cost was genuinely confusing. Those discounts are gone, and the FSD trial that replaced them has no lease math to worry about.
Second, other manufacturers' referral schemes often exclude leases outright, so people assume Tesla's does too. It does not. If you are a lessee, the practical risk is not eligibility. It is starting your order without a valid link, or with a link from an owner who already hit the 10-referrals-per-year cap and whose link silently applies nothing.
If you are about to lease, grab a verified link from ReferATesla.ca before you open the configurator; how it works takes about a minute to read.
FAQ
Does the Tesla referral code work on a lease?
Yes. A lease order started from an active referral link gets the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial after delivery, and the referrer earns $250 USD / $325 CAD in Tesla Credits when the lease is delivered.
Does the referrer earn credits if the buyer leases instead of buys?
Yes. Referrer credits are granted on delivery of a qualifying new vehicle, and a leased delivery counts. The amount is the same as for a purchase: $250 USD or $325 CAD.
Does the referral stack with the $6,500 lease credit?
Yes. The $6,500 lease credit is built into U.S. lease pricing on eligible models, and the referral adds an FSD trial after delivery rather than changing the price, so the two do not conflict.
Can I use a referral on a Tesla business lease?
If you place the order yourself through Tesla's site from a referral link, yes. If a fleet or leasing company places the order for you, the referral usually will not attach because the order was not started from your link.
Does a lease buyout qualify for a referral?
No. A buyout is not a new vehicle order, so there is no referral benefit for you and no credit for anyone else.
Can I refer friends if I lease my Tesla?
Often yes, since the leased vehicle sits in your account, but Tesla's terms say you must own a qualifying product, and some lessees have reported losing Refer and Earn access. Check the Tesla app: if Refer and Earn appears, your link works.
