Key takeaway

Tesla's U.S. Refer and Earn screen now offers a "give a month, get a month" FSD (Supervised) referral between existing owners, capped at 12 rewards a year. This guide covers who can refer, who can be referred, what each side gets, how to share a link in the app, and why U.S. referral links now offer no vehicle benefit as of Oct 30, 2026.

The Tesla FSD referral program is a new U.S.-only "give a month, get a month" offer, live as of October 30, 2026, in which an existing Tesla owner who pays for Full Self-Driving (Supervised) shares a link from the Tesla app, a friend who owns a Tesla gets a one-month trial, and the referrer earns one free month of FSD (or US$99 in Tesla Credits if they bought FSD outright) when the friend subscribes, capped at 12 rewards per calendar year.

If you searched for a "tesla fsd referral" or an "fsd referral code" hoping to save on a new car, read the vehicle section below first, because this program is for people who already own a Tesla. Tesla made no announcement, and a few details are still unsettled. This guide to the Tesla referral program 2026 changes separates what is confirmed from what is not, starting with how the give a month get a month offer works.

What the Tesla FSD Referral Program Is

Open the Refer and Earn screen in the Tesla app in the U.S. and it now reads "Give a Month, Get a Month of Full Self-Driving (Supervised)." It carries the line "When your friends and family subscribe during their trial," a meter reading "0 of 12 Free Months Earned," and the note "Limited to 12 months of free Full Self-Driving (Supervised) per calendar year."

In plain terms, the Tesla FSD referral program works like this:

  • An owner who pays for FSD (Supervised) shares a link from the app.

  • A friend who owns a Tesla accepts it and gets a one-month FSD (Supervised) trial.

  • If the friend starts a paid subscription, the referrer is rewarded.

Our sources are a U.S. owner's screenshot of the new app screen, Tesla's U.S. support page as captured on October 29 and 30, and reporting from Electrek, Tesla North and Teslarati. Tesla has not published a start date or an end date for the program. It is live in the U.S. today, and nothing is confirmed for Canada.

Who Can Refer a Friend

You can refer if you are an existing Tesla owner and either of these is true:

  • You pay for FSD (Supervised) on a monthly subscription.

  • You bought FSD outright before Tesla stopped selling it on February 14, 2026.

You cannot refer if you hold FSD only through a one-year grant. Tesla's page leaves those owners out.

Who Can Be Referred

The person receiving the link must be an existing Tesla owner, not a car buyer. This is the most common misunderstanding about the program, and it is why this offer is not a substitute for an order link. To qualify, the recipient needs all of the following:

  • A Tesla with FSD-compatible hardware.

  • No paid FSD subscription in the previous 12 months.

  • No outright FSD purchase, ever.

There is one more wait to know about. If you received a free FSD trial with a new vehicle, you must wait until 12 months after that trial ended before you can be referred. So a friend who took delivery in the last year with a bundled trial is not eligible yet. See how to get the free Tesla FSD trial for the new-car trials that trigger this wait.

What Each Side Gets

The reward is paid only after the recipient starts a paid subscription. Accepting the link and using the trial earns the referrer nothing on its own.

If you hold US$99 in credits, they behave like other Tesla Credits. Our Tesla Credits explained guide covers what credits can be spent on and how the expiry clock works.

How to Share and Accept an FSD Referral Link

Everything happens inside the Tesla app. There is no code to type into a website.

  1. Update the app. Version 4.62.0 or later is required. If you do not see the new screen, check for an update first.

  2. Open Refer and Earn.

  3. Share your link. Send it to a friend who owns a Tesla.

  4. The friend accepts it in their own Tesla app. They then receive the one-month FSD (Supervised) trial.

  5. The friend starts a paid subscription. That is the moment the referrer's reward is triggered.

One detail Tesla has not squared away: its two pages disagree on timing. The FSD page says the referrer is rewarded when the friend subscribes during the trial, while the main Refer and Earn page says after the trial. Both agree the trigger is the friend starting a paid subscription. We cannot say which day the month or the credits land, so do not plan around an exact date.

A note on links: FSD referral links are personal links that owners share with each other inside the app. ReferATesla.ca does not distribute them today. Our rotating referral link is for vehicle buyers, and it does not give you or a friend an FSD subscription referral. The best source for an FSD link is an owner you know who already subscribes.

How the FSD Referral Differs From the Vehicle Referral Program

This is a separate program, and it arrived as the vehicle offer disappeared from U.S. referral links. The older vehicle referral program rewarded people who ordered a car through a link. The two compare like this:

Vehicle referral (what the U.S. program paid until late October 2026)FSD referral (U.S., from late October 2026)
Who receives the linkA person ordering a new carAn existing Tesla owner
Recipient benefitFSD (Supervised) trial with the new carOne-month FSD (Supervised) trial

Where it is doneOrder flow from a linkTesla app, Refer and Earn
StatusNot offered on U.S. referral links as of October 30, 2026Live in the U.S.

Here is what changed. As of October 30, 2026, U.S. referral links offer no vehicle benefit. A U.S. owner opened a live referral link that day and the order page offered only "Solar Panels & Powerwall, $400 Off." There was no vehicle, no 3-month FSD trial and no Tesla Credits offer anywhere on it. The 3-month trial for the buyer and the $250 USD referrer credit are what the U.S. program paid until late October 2026. Tesla's U.S. support page matches: as captured on October 30 it no longer lists Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck as qualifying products for vehicle referral benefits, and only solar panels remain on that list.

Tesla has not announced the change and prints no effective date, and the page still carries leftover vehicle wording. Reporting differs on how to read it: Electrek says vehicle referral rewards were dropped in the U.S., while Tesla North reported the car track continuing alongside the new program, and the owner's app screenshot still shows a vehicle tab next to the solar and history tabs. Tesla may change this again. Our current Tesla referral program page is where we will post updates.

What This Means If You Are Buying a Car in the U.S. Right Now

Plan as if there is no referral benefit on a U.S. car order. If you want to try anyway:

  • Open your order from a referral link anyway. It costs nothing.

  • Check the order summary for the referral line before you pay the order fee.

  • If the line is absent, assume no benefit applies. Decide on the car as if there were no referral.

The only U.S. referral offer on a link today is $400 off Solar Panels and Powerwall for the buyer. Until Tesla says otherwise, the order summary is the only proof of any benefit. Loyalty, Heroes, lease credit and inventory rules are unaffected by this change. Is the Tesla FSD Referral Program Available in Canada

Not that we can find. Tesla's Canadian page is unchanged. It still lists Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck for vehicle referrals: the buyer gets 3 months of FSD (Supervised), and the referrer earns $325 CAD in Tesla Credits, with 10 order referrals allowed per calendar year. The FSD referral program has not appeared on the Canadian page or in Canadian apps as far as we can tell, and a Canadian rollout has not been announced.

If you are in Canada, our overview of the Tesla referral program in Canada still applies. We will re-check both pages in about a week.

What to Do Now

If you are a U.S. owner who already subscribes to FSD, open the Tesla app, update to 4.62.0 or later and look at Refer and Earn. Then send your link to a friend who owns a Tesla and has not paid for FSD in the past year.

If you are ordering a car instead, you can still grab a verified referral link from ReferATesla.ca before you order, but confirm a referral line appears in your order summary before paying, and assume no benefit if it does not.

FAQ

Is the Tesla FSD referral program available in Canada?

Not as far as we can tell. Tesla's Canadian page is unchanged and still shows the vehicle referral with a 3-month FSD trial for the buyer and $325 CAD in credits for the referrer. The FSD referral has not appeared in Canadian apps, and Tesla has not announced a rollout.

Can a new buyer use the FSD referral link?

No. The recipient must be an existing Tesla owner with FSD-compatible hardware, not a car buyer. Someone who received a free FSD trial with a new vehicle must wait until 12 months after that trial ended.

Do I need a certain Tesla app version?

Yes. You need Tesla app version 4.62.0 or later to see and use the new Refer and Earn screen. The referrer shares the link there, and the recipient accepts it in their own Tesla app.

What if I already had an FSD trial with my new car?

You have to wait until 12 months after that trial ended before you can be referred. You also cannot be referred if you paid for an FSD subscription in the previous 12 months or bought FSD outright.

Is the US$99 credit taxable or can I cash it out?

You cannot cash it out. The US$99 is paid in Tesla Credits, which expire 12 months after they are granted. We have no confirmed information on tax treatment for this program, so ask a tax professional if it matters to you.

How many times can I earn the reward?

Up to 12 rewards per calendar year, tracked as free months earned out of 12 in the app. The counter resets on January 1.
