Key takeaway

Ordering a new Model 3, Model Y or eligible Cybertruck through a referral link attaches a 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial, worth about $297 at the $99/month subscription price now that outright purchase has ended. This guide compares it with the 30-day new-owner trial and Tesla's periodic owner trials, explains what happens when it ends, and lists the steps to make sure it is on your order.

Tesla Model Y touchscreen showing Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial active with three months remaining

The most reliable way to get a free Tesla FSD trial in 2026 is to order a new Model 3, Model Y or eligible Cybertruck through an active referral link, which attaches a 3-month Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial to your order. Every other free trial Tesla offers is either shorter (the standard 30-day trial for new owners) or something Tesla hands out on its own schedule to existing owners, and you cannot request it.

This matters more than it used to. Since February 14, 2026, Tesla no longer sells FSD outright in North America. It is subscription-only at $99 USD / $99 CAD per month, so three months of the referral trial is worth roughly $297 USD / $297 CAD of driving you would otherwise pay for. This guide covers each type of Tesla FSD trial, who qualifies, what happens when it ends, and the exact steps to make sure the referral trial is attached to your order.

The Three Kinds of Tesla FSD Trial

People searching for a "Tesla FSD trial" are usually talking about one of three different things. They have different lengths, different eligibility rules, and only one of them is something you can deliberately go and get.

TrialWho gets itLengthCan you request it?
Referral trialNew buyers who order through an active referral link (Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck Premium AWD / Cyberbeast)3 monthsYes, by starting your order from a referral link

Periodic owner trialExisting owners Tesla selects, most recently HW4/AI4 cars onlyTypically 30 days (the late-2025 trial ran about 40 days)No. Tesla pushes it to eligible cars; you cannot opt in or defer it

The rest of this post focuses on the first one, because it is the only one a buyer controls.

The 3-Month Tesla Referral FSD Trial

Under Tesla's current Refer and Earn program in the U.S. and Canada, the buyer's benefit is three months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised). There is no longer a dollar discount on the vehicle for using a referral. The $500, $1,000 and $2,000-off buyer discounts you may still see quoted online are from 2024 and 2025 and are gone.

Eligible vehicles as of the March 2026 program update:

  • Model 3 — all trims

  • Model Y — all trims, including the longer-wheelbase Model Y L where sold

  • Cybertruck — Premium AWD and Cyberbeast only. The Dual Motor AWD trim is excluded.

Model S and Model X were removed from the referral program in March 2026 as Tesla winds down production, so a referral link applied to one of those orders earns nothing for either party.

The trial is tied to the vehicle and starts when you take delivery, not when you order.

The referral also pays the owner who shared the link: $250 USD / $325 CAD in Tesla Credits after your delivery. Our explainer on how the referral program works covers both sides in detail, and the how it works page explains how ReferATesla.ca hands out links.

How the Referral Trial Differs From the 30-Day Trial

Tesla has given every new owner a 30-day FSD (Supervised) trial on delivery since 2024. That trial is separate from the referral program, and Tesla's own support page for it says the two cannot be combined: if you ordered through a referral link and received referral benefits, you are not eligible for the 30-day trial on top.

Several referral-code sites claim the two stack to roughly four months. We have not been able to confirm that against Tesla's published terms, and Tesla's page says the opposite. Plan on three months total with a referral, and treat any extra days as a bonus rather than something you are owed.

Can You Get a Tesla FSD Trial Again

This is the second most common question, usually from owners whose trial ended and who want another one.

The honest answer is that you cannot ask for one. Tesla runs periodic free trials for existing owners when it wants to push a new FSD version, and it decides who gets them. The most recent large one was the FSD v14 trial for roughly 1.5 million HW4 cars in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. It started around November 29, 2025, was announced as 30 days, and in practice ran until about January 8, 2026. Eligible owners got an email and an app notification, the trial started automatically, and it could not be deferred.

Tesla's support page for that trial now says it is no longer available. Owners on Hardware 3 were excluded entirely because v14 did not run on HW3; a slimmed-down FSD v14 Lite reached HW3 cars in a wide release in July 2026, so a future HW3 trial is at least technically possible, but Tesla has not announced one.

If you already own a Tesla and want another trial, your realistic options are:

  • Wait for Tesla's next promotional trial and keep your software up to date so you are eligible when it arrives.

  • Subscribe for one month at $99 USD / $99 CAD and cancel. There is no annual contract.

  • If you are buying another new Tesla, note that the referral trial is a buyer benefit for a first Tesla purchase, so existing owners generally cannot claim it on a second car. See our discount stacking guide for how loyalty and referral interact.

What Happens When the Trial Ends

Tesla does not automatically convert the trial into a paid subscription. When the trial period ends, FSD (Supervised) simply switches off and the car reverts to the Autopilot features it came with. You are not charged unless you go into the Tesla app and subscribe.

If you do want to keep it:

  • The subscription is $99 USD per month in the U.S. and $99 CAD per month in Canada, billed monthly with no term commitment.

  • You subscribe and cancel in the Tesla app under Upgrades. Cancelling keeps FSD active until the end of the paid month.

Tesla has said publicly that the monthly price will rise as the software improves, so treat $99 as the price on the day you read this rather than a fixed number.

Set a calendar reminder for the end of your third month.

Hardware Eligibility: HW3 vs HW4 (AI4)

If you are ordering a new Tesla, hardware is not something you need to worry about. Every new Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck delivered in 2026 ships with Hardware 4 (also called AI4) or newer, and the referral trial runs on it without restriction.

Hardware matters for the periodic trials aimed at existing owners. Tesla's late-2025 v14 trial was HW4-only, and HW3 cars (roughly 2019 to early-2023 Model 3 and Model Y, plus older Model S and X) were left out. HW3 now runs FSD v14 Lite, a reduced version, and Tesla has confirmed that HW3 will not reach unsupervised operation. Whether a future free trial includes HW3 is up to Tesla.

The Tesla FSD Trial in Canada

Everything above applies in Canada. FSD (Supervised) is available across all provinces, the referral trial is three months, and the subscription is $99 CAD per month after it ends. The Canadian referrer earns $325 CAD in Tesla Credits per delivered referral.

One Quebec-specific note: the separate $20 CAD credit that owners earn for referring someone to an FSD demo drive is not currently offered to Quebec residents. That does not affect the buyer's 3-month trial. Our province-by-province referral guide covers the regional details.

How the Trial Interacts With the Referrer's FSD Bonus

Tesla's app shows the referrer earning $250 USD / $325 CAD per delivered referral.

Referrers who want the details on how credits are paid, spent and expire should read our Tesla referral credits guide.

Step by Step: Make Sure the Trial Is Attached

Most missed referral trials come down to the order being started without the link. Tesla applies the referral to your order session; there is no code box to type into later.

  1. Get an active link first. Owners hit an annual cap of 10 referred orders, and once they do their link loads normally but applies nothing. Ask an owner you trust, or use our rotating referral link, which routes you to a verified, uncapped link.

  2. Open the link before you configure anything. If you already have a Tesla order page open, close it and start again from the link.

  3. Sign in to the Tesla account you will take delivery under. The referral must land on the account that owns the car.

  4. Configure and check out in the same browser session. Switching devices or coming back later can drop the referral.

  5. Confirm the referral benefit is shown before you pay the order fee. Tesla's page says referral links cannot be applied after ordering; some owners report advisors helping before the order is finalized, but do not count on it.

  6. After delivery, check the Autopilot menu. FSD (Supervised) should show as active with an end date about three months out. If it does not appear within a day or two of delivery, contact Tesla support through the app with your order number.

If you plan to use FSD heavily during the trial, make sure you also know how the 3-month offer fits alongside Tesla's Robotaxi rollout, which we track separately rather than repeating here.

Before you place your order, grab a verified referral link from ReferATesla.ca so the 3-month trial is attached from the start.

FAQ

How do I get a free Tesla FSD trial in 2026?

Order a new Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck Premium AWD / Cyberbeast through an active referral link before paying the order fee. You get a 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial after delivery instead of the standard 30 days.

Can I get the Tesla FSD trial again after it ends?

Not on request. Tesla occasionally pushes free trials to existing owners, most recently a v14 trial for HW4 cars from late November 2025 to early January 2026, but it chooses who is eligible. Otherwise you can subscribe month to month at $99 USD / $99 CAD.

Does the FSD trial automatically charge me when it ends?

No. FSD (Supervised) turns off at the end of the trial and you are only billed if you subscribe in the Tesla app.

How much does FSD cost after the trial?

$99 USD per month in the U.S. and $99 CAD per month in Canada, with no long-term contract. Outright purchase ended February 14, 2026, and Tesla has said the monthly price will rise over time.

Do I need Hardware 4 for the referral FSD trial?

Every new Tesla delivered in 2026 already has HW4 (AI4) or newer, so new buyers do not need to check. Hardware only matters for the periodic trials Tesla offers existing owners, which have recently excluded HW3.

Is the 3-month Tesla FSD trial available in Canada?

Yes. The referral trial and the $99 CAD monthly subscription are both offered in Canada, including Quebec. Only the separate demo-drive referral credit is unavailable to Quebec residents.
