Where Is My Tesla Referral Credit? The 8 Reasons It Never Posted, and What to Do

Key takeaway

A Tesla referral credit that is not showing up is usually a timing issue: credits are granted at delivery and can take days to about 30 days to leave pending status. Past that, one of eight causes is almost always responsible, from an unapplied link to the 10-per-year cap. This guide covers where to check in the app, each cause, how to contact Tesla, and the 12-month expiry clock.

Tesla app Refer and Earn history screen showing a referral credit marked pending

Tesla referral credit not showing up? The most likely explanation is timing: credits are granted after the referred buyer takes delivery, not when they order, and even then they can take a few days to roughly 30 days to move from "pending" to available under Wallet > Tesla Credits. If it has been more than 30 days since delivery and nothing has posted, something else went wrong, and it is usually one of eight fixable or at least explainable causes.

This guide covers where to check, what the normal timeline looks like in 2026, the eight most common reasons a credit never appears, how to raise it with Tesla, and how the expiry clock works once the credit does land. If you want the full picture on what credits are worth and how to spend them, that lives in our Tesla referral credits explained guide; this post is about the credit that is missing.

Where to Check for a Tesla Referral Credit

There are three places in the Tesla app, and most owners only know about one.

  1. Wallet > Tesla Credits. Open the Tesla app, tap your name, then Wallet, then Tesla Credits. This shows your available credit balance and what you can spend it on.

  2. Refer and Earn history. From the same menu, tap Refer and Earn, then History. This is the screen that matters when a credit is missing: it lists each referral, whether it is pending or granted, and the date attached to it.

  3. Expiry date. The same Tesla Credits screen shows the date your credits expire, and Tesla emails you 30 days before.

If the buyer's order is not listed in your history at all, skip ahead to the causes section, because the problem is almost certainly that the referral never attached to their order. If it is listed as pending, keep reading.

When Tesla Referral Credits Show Up

Tesla's process has two stages:

  • Pending. When the buyer places an order through your link, the referral appears in your history as pending. Nothing can be spent yet.

  • Granted. The Grant Date is the day the referred vehicle is delivered (or a referred energy product is activated). At that point the credit converts to a spendable balance under Wallet > Tesla Credits.

Tesla's own wording suggests the credit lands at or shortly after delivery. Owner reports are messier. Some see it the same week; others have been told by Tesla staff to allow up to four weeks. A reasonable rule: if the buyer took delivery more than 30 days ago and the credit still reads pending or is absent, open a case with Tesla. Before that, waiting is the correct move.

Tesla Referral Credit Not Showing Up: Eight Common Reasons

Working from most to least common.

1. The referral link was never applied to the order

Tesla has no referral code box at checkout. The referral attaches to the order session started from your link. If the buyer opened your link, then later built the car in a fresh tab, on a different device, or from a saved design, the referral usually did not carry over. Tesla's page says referral links cannot be applied after ordering; some owners report advisors helping before the order is finalized, but do not count on it. Our guide on how to use a Tesla referral code walks through applying it correctly.

2. The order was cancelled and re-placed

A cancelled order takes its referral with it. If the buyer cancelled to change trim or colour and then reordered without reopening your link, the second order has no referral attached, even though the first one did.

3. Delivery has not actually completed

A buyer telling you they "got the car" is not the same as Tesla marking the delivery complete in its system. Paperwork holds, financing delays, and registration issues can all leave an order in a pre-delivery state for days after the buyer physically drove away. The Grant Date follows Tesla's record, not the handover.

4. Self-referral or same-household referral

Tesla's terms require the buyer to be purchasing their first qualifying Tesla product. An existing owner who orders through a link, their own or anyone else's, is treated as a loyalty purchase, not a referral, and no referrer credit is issued. Tesla also reserves the right to withhold benefits where it believes someone is acting contrary to the intent of the program, and some owners report that same-address referrals between spouses draw scrutiny (Tesla publishes no same-household rule). We cover the detail in can you use your own Tesla referral code.

5. You hit the annual referral cap

Tesla limits referrer benefits to 10 order referrals per calendar year (plus 30 demo-drive referrals over the life of the account). Once you are at 10, your link still loads and may still show the buyer their benefit, but nothing accrues to you. If you have been sharing your link widely, check your History count for the current year before assuming Tesla lost a credit. The counter resets January 1.

6. The buyer used a different referral

Tesla honours the referral link attached to the order that was placed, and only one referral can apply. If the buyer clicked a friend's link, a forum link, or a rotating link after yours, Tesla does not publish a tie-break rule, but reports suggest the link active when the order was placed is the one recorded. There is no split credit.

7. Region or residency mismatch

The program is subject to the laws of the registration address of both parties, and some regions are simply excluded. In the U.S., residents of Ohio and Virginia can receive buyer benefits but are not eligible for referrer benefits. In Canada, British Columbia residents can receive buyer and loyalty benefits but are not eligible for referrer benefits. Cross-border referrals, a Canadian owner referring a U.S. buyer for example, do not reliably credit either. Our province-by-province Canada guide covers regional exclusions in more detail.

8. The credit posted and then expired

A "disappeared" credit is usually an expired one. Credits last 12 months from their Grant Date; Supercharging miles last 6 months. Tesla emails a warning 30 days before expiry, but those emails are easy to miss. Check the date under Wallet > Tesla Credits before assuming a glitch.

How to Contact Tesla About a Missing Referral Credit

There is no widely advertised dedicated referral hotline. The routes that work:

  • Tesla app. Menu, Support, then describe the issue. Reference "Refer and Earn" in the first line so it routes correctly.

  • The buyer's advisor. Before delivery, the buyer's sales advisor can see whether a referral is attached to the order. This is the only route that has reportedly worked for cause number 1, and only while the order is still open; Tesla's page says links cannot be applied after ordering.

  • Tesla account on the web. Sign in at tesla.com, open your account, and use the support contact form there if the app request goes unanswered.

Include the following, or expect a slow back-and-forth:

  1. Your referral link or code.

  2. The buyer's full name and the email on their Tesla account.

  3. The order number (the buyer can find it in their app or confirmation email) and the delivery date.

  4. A screenshot of your Refer and Earn History showing the referral as pending, or showing its absence.

  5. If the buyer has one, a screenshot of the referral benefit showing on their order page at the time of ordering.

Be direct and factual. Owners report that Tesla checks whether the order carries a referral flag; if it does not, the case usually ends there. If it does and the credit simply never posted, they may be able to push it through manually.

The Expiry Clock Once Credits Do Post

Once a credit lands, the countdown starts:

  • Tesla Credits: 12 months from the Grant Date (Ontario residents' referrer credits never expire).

  • Supercharging miles: 6 months from the Grant Date.

  • Extension: earning a new credit resets the expiry of your whole balance to 12 months from the newest Grant Date. Redeeming credits for Supercharging miles extends all your miles by 6 months, up to 36 months.

Credits are not cash, not transferable, and cannot be moved to another account. If you are sitting on a balance close to its expiry date, the practical advice is to spend it on something you would buy anyway rather than lose it. Redemption options are covered in the credits guide.

If You Are the Buyer and the FSD Trial Did Not Show Up

The buyer-side benefit in 2026 is a 3-month Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial, which activates after delivery rather than at order time. If it is missing, the same causes apply: the referral did not attach, the order was re-placed, or you were an existing owner and the purchase was treated as a loyalty order instead. Check your order confirmation for a referral line item; if it is not there, the referral was never on the order. Details on the buyer perk are in our FSD 3-month offer tracker.

Avoiding the Problem Next Time

Most missing credits trace back to the order stage, not to Tesla losing data. Referrers should tell buyers to open the link and complete the order in the same session. Buyers who do not have an owner to ask can use our rotating referral link, which routes to an owner who has not hit their annual cap so the referral actually applies; the how it works page explains the checks. If you are ordering soon, grab a verified link from ReferATesla.ca before you start your configuration rather than after.

FAQ

When do I get my Tesla referral credit?

Credits are granted after the referred buyer takes delivery, not when they order. Expect them to move from pending to available within a few days to about 30 days after delivery.

Why does my Tesla referral credit say pending?

Pending means the buyer's order carries your referral but delivery has not been recorded yet. It converts to a spendable credit on the Grant Date, which is the delivery date.

How do I check my Tesla referral credits?

Open the Tesla app, tap the top-right menu, and open Refer and Earn, then History, to see each referral's status. Your spendable balance and its expiry date are under Wallet > Tesla Credits.

Why did my Tesla referral credit disappear?

Most often it expired: Tesla Credits last 12 months from the Grant Date and Supercharging miles last 6 months. Less often, a credit can be withdrawn if the referred order is cancelled or found ineligible.

What does "referral limit has been reached" mean?

The referrer has already earned credits on 10 order referrals this calendar year, which is Tesla's cap. The buyer should use a different active link before placing the order.

Can Tesla add a referral after the order is placed?

No. Tesla's page says referral links cannot be applied after ordering; some owners report advisors helping before the order is finalized, but do not count on it. Apply the referral at order time.
