Tesla Loyalty Discount 2026: $500 Off for Existing Owners, and Why It Won't Stack With a Referral

Key takeaway

Tesla's loyalty discount gives existing owners $500 off a new Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck ordered on the same account, applied automatically with no trade-in required. It does not stack with the Everyday Heroes discount, and Tesla's referral terms limit buyer benefits to a first Tesla purchase, so existing owners are effectively choosing one. This guide covers amounts, eligibility, how it shows on your paperwork, and which discount is bigger for you.

The Tesla loyalty discount is a $500 price reduction for existing Tesla owners who order another new Tesla on the same Tesla account, and as of late September 2026 it is running in both the U.S. and Canada. It applies automatically, it does not require a trade-in, and it can be used up to 10 times over the life of your account.

The part that trips people up is stacking. Loyalty does not combine with the Everyday Heroes discount, and Tesla's referral terms say the buyer-side referral benefit is only for your first Tesla, so in practice an existing owner is choosing loyalty or referral rather than getting both. This guide explains what the loyalty discount is, how it is applied, who qualifies, and how to work out which discount is worth more on your specific order.

What the Tesla Loyalty Discount Actually Is

Tesla calls it "Loyalty Benefits" and lists it inside the Tesla app under Refer and Earn, alongside the referral program. It is a fixed-dollar reduction on the purchase price of a new vehicle, available when the account placing the order already owns a qualifying Tesla product.

It is not a Tesla Credit, not a voucher, and not something you redeem under Wallet > Tesla Credits. It shows up as a line item on the order paperwork, which is why it behaves differently from a referral reward. If you want the background on how credits work by contrast, see our guide to Tesla referral credits.

Current Loyalty Discount Amounts (Late 2026)

VehicleLoyalty discount, U.S.Loyalty discount, Canada
Model 3 (new)$500 USDUp to $500 CAD
Model Y (new)$500 USDUp to $500 CAD
Cybertruck (new)$500 USDUp to $500 CAD
Model S / Model XNot a qualifying productNot a qualifying product

Two things changed in March 2026. Before then, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck buyers received a $1,000 loyalty discount while Model 3 and Model Y buyers received $500. Tesla flattened that to $500 across every model at the same time it removed the Model S and X from the referral program ahead of the end of their production. The Canadian figure is quoted by Tesla as "up to $500" in local currency; we have not seen a Canadian order agreement confirming a different CAD figure, so treat $500 CAD as the working number and check your order page.

Tesla has turned loyalty on and off over the years and has changed the amount at least three times since 2024, so this table is a snapshot. Reconfirm the figure in the Tesla app the day you order.

Who Qualifies

The eligibility rules are short:

  • You currently own a qualifying Tesla product on your Tesla account. A vehicle is the normal case; Tesla's Refer and Earn page lists Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck as qualifying products (in the U.S., solar panels too), so a car is the safe assumption.

  • You order the new vehicle on that same account, meaning the same email address and login. This is the rule people break most often, usually by ordering under a spouse's name or a new email.

  • The new vehicle is new, either custom-ordered or from new inventory. Used and demo vehicles from Tesla's pre-owned inventory do not qualify.

  • You have not already used loyalty 10 times. There is a lifetime cap of 10 loyalty rewards per account.

A trade-in is not required. You can keep your existing Tesla, sell it privately, or trade it in; the loyalty discount is tied to ownership at the time of order, not to what you do with the old car. Canada did run a separate promotion in 2026 giving 5,000 km of free Supercharging to owners who traded in through Tesla on orders placed between January 1 and October 31, 2026, but that is a trade-in incentive layered on top, not a condition of the loyalty discount itself.

How the Loyalty Discount Is Applied

There is nothing to enter and no link to click. When you sign in and place an order on an account that already owns a Tesla, the discount attaches to the order automatically.

What surprises buyers is where it shows up. The loyalty amount is frequently not visible in the price breakdown on the online configurator. It appears on the order agreement Tesla sends after you pay the order fee, and on the final invoice, typically labelled as a sales incentive or loyalty adjustment. If you pay the order fee, receive the agreement and do not see it, message your Tesla advisor from the app before delivery. Because the discount is a price adjustment rather than a session-based benefit, Tesla can correct it before the final paperwork in a way it generally will not do for a missed referral.

You should also see the benefit listed in the Tesla app under Refer and Earn, then Loyalty Benefits, before you order. If it is not there, your account may not be recognised as owning a qualifying vehicle, and that is worth resolving first.

The Stacking Rules

This is where most of the search traffic for "Tesla loyalty vs referral" and "Tesla referral and loyalty" comes from, and the rules are less flexible than a lot of forum posts suggest.

Loyalty and the Everyday Heroes discount

These do not stack. Tesla's Everyday Heroes discount ($500 USD in the U.S., $1,000 CAD in Canada, for military, first responders, teachers, students and healthcare workers) is a competing price adjustment, and an order carries one or the other. An eligible existing owner in Canada is better off with Heroes at $1,000 CAD; in the U.S. the two are the same $500, so pick whichever is easier to document. Our U.S. Heroes guide and Canadian Heroes guide cover verification.

Loyalty and a referral link

Our earlier working assumption was that these could coexist because they apply through different mechanisms: the referral through the order session, loyalty through a price adjustment on the account. Tesla's Refer and Earn terms are stricter than that. They state that buyer benefits are available only when purchasing your first qualifying Tesla product, and that once you have made that first purchase you no longer qualify for buyer benefits. Existing owners on Tesla Motors Club report the referral trial being denied on second-car orders for exactly that reason. In the U.S., the vehicle referral benefit itself is no longer offered as of Oct 30, 2026. Update, Oct 30, 2026: U.S. Tesla referral links now offer only $400 off Solar Panels and Powerwall; the 3-month FSD trial and $250 USD referrer credit on vehicle orders are no longer offered in the U.S., so if no referral line shows in your order summary, no benefit applies. See the current Tesla referral program for the latest.

So for an existing owner, the realistic position in 2026 is:

  • You get the $500 loyalty discount automatically.

  • You do not get the 3-month FSD (Supervised) referral trial, even if you start the order from someone's link.

  • You can still refer other people and earn $325 CAD per delivery as a Canadian referrer (a U.S. referrer earned $250 USD until late October 2026; that U.S. vehicle referral benefit is no longer offered as of Oct 30, 2026). Owning a Tesla only blocks you from being the referred buyer.

Tesla has been inconsistent about enforcing this in the past, and a small number of owners report both landing on one order. Do not plan around it. If both appear on your paperwork, consider it a bonus.

Loyalty and government rebates

Loyalty stacks with government incentives such as Canada's EVAP rebate and provincial programs, because those are applied outside Tesla's own promotion rules. The full matrix of what combines with what is in our Tesla discount stacking guide, so we will not repeat it here.

Existing Owner: Which Discount Is Bigger for You

Because loyalty and the referral trial are effectively exclusive, the useful question is which one you would rather have if you had the choice, and whether Heroes beats both. Value the referral trial at the current subscription price of $99 USD / $99 CAD per month.

First-time buyer, Heroes-eligibleReferral + Heroes$500 USD (no U.S. vehicle referral benefit as of Oct 30, 2026), or $1,000 CAD + trialThese two do stack.
Ordering under a family member who has never owned a TeslaReferral link on their account3-month trial (Canada; U.S. no vehicle benefit as of Oct 30, 2026)Only if they will genuinely be the owner. Same-household self-referral gets denied.

One nuance for existing owners who care more about FSD than the $500: the loyalty discount is cash off the car, while three months of FSD would cost about $297 to buy. Loyalty wins on value even before you account for the fact that you cannot claim the trial anyway.

Common Mistakes

  • Ordering under a different email. The discount keys off the account. A new email means a new account with no ownership history.

  • Assuming it failed because it is missing from the configurator. Check the order agreement first.

  • Chasing a referral link as an existing owner. You will not get the trial, and clicking a link does not remove loyalty, but it wastes one of the referrer's annual slots if Tesla records it.

  • Expecting loyalty on used inventory. Pre-owned purchases do not qualify.

  • Timing. Tesla has pulled loyalty with little notice before. If the benefit is showing in your app today and you are ready to order, order.

If You Are Buying Your First Tesla

None of the above applies to you yet. As a first-time buyer, loyalty is not available, but the referral trial is in Canada, and it stacks with Heroes and with government rebates. In the U.S. the vehicle referral benefit is no longer offered as of Oct 30, 2026, so start your order from a verified link anyway (it costs nothing) and check the order summary: if no referral line shows, no benefit applies; in Canada the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial is attached; our guide to finding and using a referral code walks through the steps. After delivery you become an existing owner, and your own referral link and future loyalty discounts kick in from there.

Before you place a first order, grab a verified link from our rotating referral link so any referral benefit is on the order from the start; the how it works page explains what happens when you click.

FAQ

How much is the Tesla loyalty discount in 2026?

$500 USD in the U.S. and up to $500 CAD in Canada on a new Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck ordered on an account that already owns a Tesla. The former $1,000 tier for Model S, X and Cybertruck was reduced to $500 in March 2026.

How do I get the Tesla loyalty discount?

Order the new vehicle while signed in to the same Tesla account that owns your current Tesla. It applies automatically and appears on the order agreement and invoice rather than on the configurator.

Does the Tesla loyalty discount stack with a referral?

Not in practice. Tesla's referral terms limit buyer benefits to your first Tesla purchase, so existing owners receive loyalty but not the 3-month FSD referral trial. You can still earn referrer credits by referring others (in the U.S. the vehicle referral benefit is no longer offered as of Oct 30, 2026). U.S. owners who already subscribe to FSD now have a separate FSD referral program: a one-month trial for a friend who owns a Tesla, and a free month (or $99 in credits) for the referrer when the friend subscribes.

Does the loyalty discount stack with the Everyday Heroes discount?

No. An order carries one or the other. In Canada, Heroes at $1,000 CAD is worth more; in the U.S. both are $500.

Do I need to trade in my Tesla to get the loyalty discount?

No. Loyalty depends on owning a qualifying Tesla on the account at the time of order. Trade-in promotions, such as the 2026 Canadian free-Supercharging offer, are separate.

Is there a limit on Tesla loyalty benefits?

Yes, 10 loyalty rewards over the lifetime of a Tesla account.
