Key takeaway

Tesla uses ID.me to verify buyers for its Heroes discount: $500 USD in the U.S. and $1,000 CAD in Canada. This guide covers who qualifies, the step-by-step verification, fixes for common failures, and how it stacks with a referral link.

Tesla ID.me verification is how eligible buyers unlock Tesla's Heroes discount: $500 USD off a new Tesla in the United States ("Made in America for Everyday Heroes," also called American Heroes) and $1,000 CAD off in Canada ("For Everyday Canadian Heroes"). ID.me confirms who you are and which group you belong to, Tesla applies the discount to your order, and it stacks with a Tesla referral link.

This guide covers the whole process: who qualifies, where the verification button is, what to upload, what to do when ID.me rejects you, and how the discount shows up on your order. If you want the full stacking picture first, start with our Everyday Heroes hub guide or the Canadian Heroes guide.

Who qualifies for the Tesla Heroes discount in the U.S. and Canada

Both countries verify through ID.me, and the eligible groups are nearly identical. The U.S. adds spouses and surviving spouses; Canada adds Canadian Armed Forces dependents with specific documents.

GroupU.S. (American Heroes)Canada (Canadian Heroes)
Discount$500 USD (cut from $1,000 in October 2025)$1,000 CAD (unchanged)
Military (active duty, veteran, retiree)Yes, plus spouses and surviving spousesYes (members, veterans, retirees, active duty, plus dependents with Canadian Armed Forces documents)
First respondersYesYes
Teachers and education staffYesYes
Post-secondary studentsYesYes
Healthcare workersYes (medical providers and nurses), added October 2025Yes (doctors and nurses), added October 2025

Tesla allows one affiliation per order. If you are a veteran and a nurse, you pick one group, and the discounts do not add together.

A note on Canadian military: Tesla's Canadian page ("For Everyday Canadian Heroes," subtitled "Military, First Responder, Healthcare, Teacher and Student Purchase Program") lists Canadian military members, veterans, retirees, active-duty personnel and Canadian Armed Forces dependents. Earlier coverage of the June 2025 launch and this site's earlier guides, including our Canadian Heroes guide, said military was excluded; that was wrong and was corrected in September 2026.

How Tesla ID.me verification works, step by step

The verification does not start inside the configurator. It starts on Tesla's Heroes page, and ID.me then sends you back to Tesla to order. Here is the flow:

  1. Open Tesla's Heroes page for your country. In the U.S. that is Tesla's "Made in America for Everyday Heroes" page. In Canada it is tesla.com/en_CA/canadian-heroes.

  2. Click the ID.me verification button. This is the "Verify with ID.me" step on the Heroes page.

  3. Sign in to or create an ID.me account. If you already have one, use it. Your ID.me identity must match your legal name.

  4. Choose your group: military, first responder, teacher, student, or healthcare.

  5. Upload what ID.me asks for. Typically that is a government photo ID plus proof of your group, such as an employer ID, a certification number, or student enrollment documents. Requirements differ by group.

  6. Wait for approval. ID.me reviews are often fast, from seconds to minutes when the automated check passes. Manual document review can take longer.

  7. Get redirected to Tesla. Once approved, you land in Tesla's Design Studio to configure and order.

Use a verified referral link to start the order session if you want the referral benefit as well. More on the order of operations below.

If you want the site-wide walkthrough of how referral links work, see how it works.

When you have to verify

Verify before you place the order. Tesla's page says ID.me verification is required before placing the order, and its fine print sets delivery as the outer deadline, with an exception for orders placed and delivered on the same day. The discount cannot be applied retroactively, cannot be redeemed for cash, and is not transferable.

In practice, treat "before delivery" as the legal deadline and "before ordering" as the safe rule. If you order first and verify later, you are relying on Tesla applying an adjustment you cannot count on.

What to do if Tesla ID.me verification fails

Most failures are fixable. The common ones, based on ID.me's own help articles:

  • Name mismatch. The name you typed does not match your ID.me wallet or your documents. Correct typos, and if you legally changed your name, request a name change with ID.me, which may require a video call.

  • Document rejected. Blurry photos, glare, cropped edges, or details that do not match are the usual reasons. ID.me emails you with an "Action Required" notice explaining what to resubmit.

  • Expired document. An expired license, passport, or employer or student ID is a common cause. Use a current document.

  • Group not supported or wrong category. Picking a group Tesla does not cover, or one that does not match your documents, can end in a denial. Check the table above, and remember military documents differ between the two countries.

  • Unfinished verification. If you left midway, restart from Tesla's Heroes page and click the ID.me button again rather than reopening an old ID.me tab.

If ID.me keeps failing, contact ID.me support directly. Tesla cannot override an ID.me denial.

How the Heroes discount shows on your order and when it applies

Once you are verified and redirected to the Design Studio, the discount is applied as an adjustment during the order. In both countries it is deducted from the purchase price, pre-tax, per Tesla's fine print. Look for a line item on the order page before you pay.

  • U.S.: $500 USD comes off the vehicle price.

  • Canada: $1,000 CAD comes off the vehicle price.

Do not assume it applied. Screenshot the order page showing the adjustment. If it is missing, contact your Tesla advisor before delivery, since the deadline is delivery. Our guide to using a Tesla referral code covers the same "confirm it on the order page" habit for referral links.

Stacking the Heroes discount with a referral link

Yes, the Heroes discount stacks with Tesla's Refer and Earn. What you get from each is different, so they do not merge into one number:

ItemU.S. exampleCanada example
Heroes discount (you)$500 USD off the vehicle$1,000 CAD off the vehicle
Referral benefit (you)No vehicle benefit as of Oct 30, 20263-month FSD (Supervised) trial
Referrer's rewardNo vehicle benefit as of Oct 30, 2026$325 CAD in Tesla Credits

Worked example, U.S.: a verified teacher orders a Model Y from a referral link. The order shows $500 USD off from American Heroes, the buyer also got the 3-month FSD trial and the referrer earned $250 USD in credits after delivery until late October 2026. In the U.S. that vehicle referral benefit is no longer offered as of Oct 30, 2026; if no referral line shows in your order summary, no benefit applies. Update, Oct 30, 2026: U.S. Tesla referral links now offer only $400 off Solar Panels and Powerwall; the 3-month FSD trial and $250 USD referrer credit on vehicle orders are no longer offered in the U.S., so if no referral line shows in your order summary, no benefit applies. See the current Tesla referral program for the latest.

Worked example, Canada: a verified nurse orders through a referral link. The order shows $1,000 CAD off from Canadian Heroes, the buyer gets the FSD trial, and the referrer earns $325 CAD.

What does not stack: a referral and the loyalty credit. Tesla's referral program is aimed at first-time buyers, so existing owners generally get either loyalty or a referral benefit, not both. Some buyers report the loyalty credit stacking with the Heroes amount, but Tesla has not confirmed it. Groups also do not stack with each other. See the Tesla discount stacking guide for the full matrix.

Order of operations: verify with ID.me first, then start the order from the referral link, then confirm both are showing before you pay. Referral links must be applied before the order is placed. U.S. owners who already subscribe to FSD now have a separate FSD referral program: a one-month trial for a friend who owns a Tesla, and a free month (or $99 in credits) for the referrer when the friend subscribes.

American Heroes vs Everyday Heroes vs Canadian Heroes

These are the same idea under different names, which is why searches are all over the place.

  • American Heroes is the U.S. name most people use. Tesla's U.S. page is titled "Made in America for Everyday Heroes," while the URL still says american-heroes.

  • Everyday Heroes is the umbrella name Tesla and news outlets use for the program as it grew from military to first responders, teachers, students, and healthcare workers. It is also the name Canadian news coverage uses for the Canadian rollout.

  • Canadian Heroes is shorthand for the Canadian page, "For Everyday Canadian Heroes," with its own $1,000 CAD amount and group list.

  • Tesla Heroes program, "Tesla heroes discount", and "Tesla hero discount" are shorthand for whichever one applies to your country.

Tesla has also renamed and reworked the program more than once, so use the label as a search aid, and rely on the Tesla page for your country for the current rules. Many guides still quote the old $1,000 USD figure. It has been $500 USD since October 2025.

Before you order

Verification takes a few minutes when your documents are current and your name matches, so do it before you configure a car. Then grab a working referral link from ReferATesla.ca before you order, so both the Heroes discount and the referral benefit are attached to the same order.

FAQ

Is it Tesla American Heros or Heroes?

The correct spelling is "Heroes" with an "e". "Heros" is a common misspelling, and searching either way lands on the same Tesla program.

Does Tesla use ID.me in Canada?

Yes. Tesla's Canadian Heroes page sends buyers through ID.me, the same verifier used in the U.S. You verify on tesla.com/en_CA/canadian-heroes and then order.

How much is the Tesla Heroes discount in 2026?

It is $500 USD in the U.S., reduced from $1,000 in October 2025, and $1,000 CAD in Canada. Always confirm the amount on your order page.

Can I verify with ID.me after I place my Tesla order?

Tesla's page says verification is required before placing the order, and its fine print sets delivery as the outer deadline (same-day orders excepted); it will not apply retroactively. The safe approach is to verify before you order.

Does the Heroes discount stack with a referral link or loyalty credit?

It stacks with a referral link (in the U.S. the vehicle referral benefit is no longer offered as of Oct 30, 2026) and with Tesla financing offers, and you can use only one group affiliation per order. Loyalty credit does not combine with a referral, and buyers report mixed results combining it with the Heroes amount.

Why did my ID.me verification fail for Tesla?

The usual causes are a name that does not match your documents, blurry or expired documents, or a group that does not match your evidence. Fix the issue, then restart from Tesla's Heroes page.

For military and veteran specifics, see our Tesla military discount guide. Other groups are covered in the student, teacher, and first responder and healthcare guides.
