Key takeaway

Tesla's student discount is the student category of its Everyday Heroes program: $500 USD off a new Tesla in the U.S. and $1,000 CAD in Canada, verified through ID.me. This guide covers who counts as a student, how to claim it, and how it stacks with a referral link.

Yes, Tesla has a student discount, but it is not a standalone program: it is the "student" category inside Tesla's Everyday Heroes program, worth $500 USD off a new Tesla in the United States and $1,000 CAD in Canada, verified through ID.me. If you are enrolled at a college or university, you can claim it and still start your order from a referral link.

This page covers the exact amount in each country, who counts as a student, the ID.me steps, which orders qualify, how to stack it with a referral, and why claims get denied. For the full program across all groups, see our Everyday Heroes hub guide.

Tesla Student Discount Amount: U.S. vs. Canada

The U.S. amount was cut from $1,000 to $500 in October 2025. Canada kept $1,000 CAD, so Canadian students currently get the larger discount. Older articles that still say "$1,000 off" for U.S. students are out of date.

The discount is not cash, cannot be transferred, and cannot be applied after the fact. Different Heroes groups do not stack with each other, so a student who is also a teacher or veteran gets one discount, not two.

Does Tesla Have a Student Discount in Canada

Yes. Canada's Heroes program includes post-secondary students alongside first responders, educators and healthcare workers. Tesla launched it in Canada in June 2025 at $1,000 CAD, and the amount has not changed. Our Canadian Heroes discount guide has the Canada-specific details.

Who Counts as a Tesla Student

Tesla hands verification to ID.me, so ID.me's student rules decide who gets through. In practice:

  • College and university students: eligible if actively enrolled at an accredited, degree- or certificate-granting institution in the U.S. or Canada.

  • Community college, junior college, vocational and technical students: ID.me lists these as eligible.

  • Graduate students: eligible when enrolled in a degree or certificate program at an accredited school.

  • High school students: The student category is post-secondary and ID.me requires accredited-school enrollment and age 18 or older, so high school students should not expect to qualify.

  • Recent graduates and alumni: not eligible once enrollment ends. ID.me treats alumni status as a separate verification.

  • International students: the rule is enrollment at an accredited U.S. or Canadian institution, not citizenship, but we could not confirm how Tesla handles non-citizen buyers at checkout. Try verification and check the result before you configure anything.

ID.me requires student applicants to be 18 or older, so that minimum applies to verification. Tesla's own page does not state an age.

How to Claim the Tesla Student Discount with ID.me

  1. Open Tesla's Heroes page for your country ("Made in America for Everyday Heroes" in the U.S., "For Everyday Canadian Heroes" in Canada).

  2. Choose Verify with ID.me and pick the student category.

  3. Sign in or create an ID.me account. ID.me may match your school automatically or ask for proof such as a school ID, enrollment verification or class schedule.

  4. Once ID.me confirms you, it sends you to Tesla's order site with the eligibility attached.

  5. Configure your car and check that the discount shows on the order page before you pay.

If you already have an ID.me account with verified student status, the process is faster. Our upcoming ID.me verification walkthrough covers the flow for every group in more detail.

Timing: Enrollment, Ordering and Delivery

Verify before you configure the order. Tesla's page says ID.me verification is required before placing the order, and its fine print sets delivery as the outer deadline (same-day orders excepted) and says the offer cannot be applied retroactively. Delivery can come weeks or months after you order, so plan around your enrollment dates. We could not confirm whether Tesla or ID.me rechecks your status at delivery. If you are graduating soon, the safest approach is to verify and order while you are still enrolled, and ask your Tesla advisor whether anything changes if your enrollment ends before delivery.

If you verified with ID.me for another store earlier, you may still be asked to confirm again for Tesla. Have your school email, a student ID or a current class schedule ready so the process does not stall mid-order.

Which Models and Orders Qualify

The discount applies to new vehicles. Tesla's Heroes pages currently offer Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck in both countries; Model S and X are not offered on the page (production ended in Q2 2026). The discount is meant for new-vehicle purchases, not pre-owned cars.

Two points we could not confirm from Tesla's own terms:

  • New inventory versus custom orders: both are new vehicles, and buyers commonly report the discount on either, but Tesla's page does not spell it out in the sources we could reach.

  • Leases: one secondary source says leases are excluded, and we found no Tesla statement either way. If you plan to lease, ask your Tesla advisor to confirm in writing before ordering.

How the Student Discount Stacks with a Referral Link

The student discount and a referral link are separate programs and can be used on the same order. The Heroes discount takes money off the price. The referral gives you a 3-month Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial, and the owner who referred you earns Tesla Credits.

Illustrative orderUnited StatesCanada
Example vehicle price (hypothetical)$40,000 USD$60,000 CAD
Student discount-$500 USD-$1,000 CAD
Price after discount$39,500 USD$59,000 CAD
Referral benefit to you3-month FSD (Supervised) trial3-month FSD (Supervised) trial
Referral credit earned by the owner$250 USD$325 CAD

The referral does not reduce your price in dollars, so your cash saving is the Heroes amount plus the value of the FSD trial to you. Prices above are examples only; your real order will differ by model, trim and region.

Do not assume both benefits landed. Confirm each on your order page before paying, and read our full stacking guide for how loyalty credit and government rebates fit in. The short version: loyalty credit and referral rewards generally do not combine, which matters if you already own a Tesla.

Order of Operations

  1. Verify with ID.me first.

  2. Open a working referral link and begin the order from it. Referrals attach to the order session and cannot be added later.

  3. Finish configuring in the same browser session.

  4. Check that both the Heroes discount and the referral appear, then pay.

Static referral codes posted online often belong to owners who have hit Tesla's cap. Our rotating referral link checks for an active one first, and how it works explains the process.

Common Reasons a Tesla Student Discount Gets Denied

  • Not currently enrolled: graduated, on a gap, or between terms without enrollment on record.

  • Non-qualifying school: unaccredited programs, short courses, or schools outside the U.S. and Canada.

  • Studying abroad as a U.S. citizen: ID.me lists this as ineligible.

  • Verifying after configuring: if you started the order before ID.me, the discount may not attach and cannot be added retroactively.

  • Used or non-qualifying vehicle: the discount is for new vehicles.

  • Second group discount: Heroes categories do not stack with each other.

  • Documents that do not match: name or school mismatches are the usual cause of ID.me rejections.
