Tesla Teacher Discount: $500 USD or $1,000 CAD Off, and What It Stacks With
Key takeaway
Tesla's teacher discount is the educator category of its Everyday Heroes program: $500 USD off a new Tesla in the U.S. and $1,000 CAD in Canada, verified through ID.me. This guide covers who qualifies, the verification steps, and what it does and does not stack with.
Last verified: October 22, 2026

Tesla does give teachers a discount: $500 USD off a new Tesla in the United States and $1,000 CAD in Canada, through the educator category of Tesla's Everyday Heroes program, verified with ID.me. It stacks with a referral link, and it has to be set up before you order.
The "Tesla teacher discount" is not a separate program. It is one of several eligibility groups in the same offer, which is why the rules below match our Everyday Heroes hub guide. Here is who qualifies, how ID.me verification works, and how to combine it correctly.
Tesla Teacher Discount Amount: U.S. vs. Canada
| United States | Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| Teacher discount | $500 USD | $1,000 CAD |
| Program name | Made in America for Everyday Heroes | For Everyday Canadian Heroes |
| Verification | ID.me | ID.me |
| Applied | Deducted from the purchase price, pre-tax | Deducted from the purchase price, pre-tax |
| Referral link | Stacks | Stacks |
| Loyalty credit | Not with a referral; buyers report it stacks with the Heroes amount | Not with a referral; buyers report it stacks with the Heroes amount |
Tesla cut the U.S. amount from $1,000 to $500 in October 2025. Canada stayed at $1,000 CAD. Guides still quoting $1,000 for U.S. teachers are outdated. For the Canada side, see our Canadian Heroes discount guide.
Who Qualifies for the Tesla Educator Discount
Tesla relies on ID.me to decide who counts as a teacher, and ID.me's rule is that you must be currently employed in education. Based on ID.me's published list:
K-12 teachers: certified teachers at public, private and charter schools are eligible.
Teaching assistants and aides: ID.me lists certified teacher aides, teaching assistants and educational assistants.
School administrators: principals, assistant principals and similar K-12 administration are listed.
College and university faculty: professors, adjuncts, instructors and lecturers are listed.
Support roles: counselors, school nurses, psychologists, social workers, librarians and speech pathologists appear on ID.me's list.
Substitute teachers: not confirmed by Tesla. ID.me requires current employment, and substitutes with a school email address or school ID reportedly often pass, but it depends on your documents.
Retired teachers: not confirmed. Current employment is the stated requirement, so retirees may not pass, and we found no Tesla statement covering them.
Homeschool teachers: ID.me says uncertified homeschool teachers are not eligible unless they can submit a valid teaching certificate.
Tesla's own page says "teachers" without a full definition, so ID.me's decision is the one that counts. If you fall into an uncertain group, start verification and see the result before configuring a car.
How ID.me Teacher Verification Works
Open Tesla's Heroes page for your country.
Click Verify with ID.me and choose the teacher or educator category.
Sign in or create an ID.me account.
Confirm your status. ID.me may check your employment automatically or ask for documents such as a pay stub, employee ID, faculty letter or teaching certificate.
After approval, ID.me sends you to Tesla's order site with the discount attached.
Configure your car and confirm the discount appears before you pay.
If your documents do not match your ID.me name, or your employer's details cannot be confirmed, the check can fail and you will be asked for more proof. Our ID.me verification guide covers the flow and fixes in more depth.
Eligible Vehicles and Order Types
The discount applies to new vehicles. Tesla's Heroes pages currently offer Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck in both countries; Model S and X are not offered on the page (production ended in Q2 2026). It is not for used cars, cannot be redeemed for cash and cannot be transferred.
What we could not confirm from Tesla's own terms:
Inventory versus custom order: both are new vehicles and buyers commonly report the discount on either, but we did not find Tesla wording that says so.
Leases: one secondary source says leases are excluded. We found no Tesla statement either way, so confirm with your advisor before leasing.
Stacking a Teacher Discount with a Referral
The educator discount and Tesla's referral program are separate and both can apply to one order. The discount reduces the price. The referral gives you a 3-month Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial, and the owner who referred you earns credits.
| Illustrative order | United States | Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Example vehicle price (hypothetical) | $45,000 USD | $65,000 CAD |
| Teacher discount | -$500 USD | -$1,000 CAD |
| Price after discount | $44,500 USD | $64,000 CAD |
| Your referral benefit | 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial | 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial |
| Referrer's credit | $250 USD | $325 CAD |
The referral does not lower your price in dollars, so your direct saving is the Heroes amount plus whatever the FSD trial is worth to you. The prices are examples only. See the stacking guide for the full matrix.
What a Teacher Discount Does Not Stack With
Loyalty credit and a referral: referrals target first-time buyers and loyalty credit targets existing owners, so buyers report getting one or the other. Some buyers report the loyalty credit stacking with the Heroes amount, but Tesla has not published that, so confirm it on your order page.
Other Heroes groups: Tesla says discounts between groups do not stack. A teacher who is also a veteran gets one discount.
Cash-out: it is a price reduction, not a payment.
It does combine with Tesla financing offers, and government EV incentives are separate programs.
Timing Relative to the Order
Verify first, then start your order. Tesla's page says ID.me verification is required before placing the order, and its fine print sets delivery as the outer deadline (same-day orders excepted). Tesla states the discount cannot be applied retroactively, and referrals attach to the order session and cannot be added afterward. A safe sequence is:
Verify with ID.me.
Open an active referral link and begin the order from it. Our rotating referral link checks for an uncapped owner first.
Configure in the same browser session.
Confirm both the discount and the referral show up, then pay.
School-year timing matters less than order timing, but if your employment could change before delivery, ask your advisor what Tesla rechecks. We could not verify whether status is rechecked at delivery. Our how it works page explains the referral side.
Documents to Have Ready
ID.me sometimes matches your employer automatically, and sometimes asks for proof. Having these ready avoids a stalled order:
A recent pay stub or employee ID showing your name and school or district.
A faculty letter or employment verification letter on school letterhead.
A valid teaching certificate or credential, if your role is not obvious from the employer record.
A school or district email address you can access, since some checks send a confirmation there.
Use the same legal name on ID.me, on your Tesla account and on your documents. Name mismatches are a common reason a check fails and has to be redone.
Common Reasons a Teacher Discount Gets Denied
Not currently employed in education: a lapsed contract, layoff or retirement may not verify.
Role not on ID.me's list: tutors, private instructors and uncertified homeschool teachers are the usual examples.
Verifying after configuring: the discount cannot be added once the order is underway.
Used vehicle: the offer covers new vehicles only.
Another Heroes discount already applied: groups do not stack.
If verification fails, read the ID.me message before retrying. It usually says which document was missing or which detail did not match.
Is the Teacher Discount Worth Planning Around
At $500 USD the U.S. discount is modest next to a vehicle price, but it costs nothing beyond a few minutes of verification, and it stacks with the referral trial. In Canada, $1,000 CAD is meaningful enough to check before you commit to a delivery date. Either way, the value is lost if you order first and verify later, so treat ID.me as step one rather than an afterthought. Because Tesla changes these programs with little notice, check the live Heroes page for your country on the day you order.

Yes. Canada's Heroes program includes educators at $1,000 CAD off a new vehicle, deducted from the purchase price pre-tax.

Tesla has not said. ID.me requires current employment in education, so retirees are generally declined, while substitutes with a school email or ID often pass. Try ID.me verification before you order.
